Why Green Real Estate?
Why Green Real Estate Is Important
• There are more than 120 million homes in the United States. According to the US Dept. of Energy the residential sector accounts for 22% of the total energy consumption and 74% of the water consumed. Reducing consumption through conservation and improvements is what Green Real Estate is all about.
• Although new home construction has declined, new homes are required to meet new energy codes, and many have green features. Knowing how to sell these features puts Green-designated Realtors® in a position to best represent Green Builders.
• The vast majority of homes sold are existing homes. Most of this huge stock of U.S. homes needs upgrading. Green-designated Realtors® have more to offer clients, such as information on resource conservation and healthier homes, helping buyers and sellers understand how to improve existing homes for energy efficiency and cost savings. They know where to direct clients for tax saving programs, rebates and energy audits and green home certifications.
• Green-certified homes are selling for more, and sell faster, than a comparable not-certified home, (according to some preliminary reports in markets other than NM).
